Austin Healey Day
Appointment with the Governor
June 16th - Day 7
We leave St Louis after two very pleasant
nights spent with Jim and Marian Rose, friends of Bob McElwee.
How kind of them to put up two complete strangers.
A HUGE THANK YOU JIM AND MARIAN
An early stop for Peter to have his waffles
and maple syrup. Bob MacElwee has problems with his daughter's
car starting but a good thump with a hammer temporarily
sorts the problem.
I drive first to-day, follow 94 on Michael Orrit's advice.
Great choice, road like a private race track, hardly a car
in sight. First little village has the wonderful name -
Defiance- I just love the names. Travel through countryside
like parts of France, wineries to left and right. we follow
the Lewis and Clark trail along the flood plain of the Mississippi,
a wide flat valley with maize and corn edged by low tree
covered hills.
 |
I
can't hang about as we have to be in Jefferson,
the State capital for a photo shoot at the State Capitol
building. All the Healeys park outside the impressive
building and we are ushered past security straight to
the Governor's inner sanctum. He is unfortunately away
but his representative reads out a proclamation by him
where he declares the 17th June 'Austin Healey Day'
in the State of Missouri, in honour of Donald Healey.
Peter is interviewed by the local TV station. |
Lunch
stop follows and Bob Brown's car has developed an oil leak.
Some wrap and a jubilee clip sorts that temporarily and
we are off again, Peter taking over the wheel. Out of Jefferson
along route 50 we are regaled with the scent of newly made
hay Stop off for drinks at Lone Jack, Larry and Kathy Dicksteins'
place.Peter and Julian have another paddle. We are all getting
very sunburnt. Peter enjoys the cool interlude with a glass
of beer straight from the fridg.
